Argentina and Chile Week

Our next country in our Around the World Homeschool curriculum was Argentina and Chile. Because we still focused on the rainforest biome for science, there are not a lot of books and activities listed here.

Books:

All out books were spines or related to the rainforest (rainforest resources here).

Activities:

Recipe:

We went all out this week and had Argentinian Beef Stew in Roasted Pumpkin Shell. It was novel and fun, but we were kind of surprised that it didn't have stronger flavors, given the ingredients.

Read Aloud:

This week we started The Boxcar Children Great Adventure: The Khipu and the Final Key. It starts in Argentina and ends in Peru, which was perfect for our schedule.

Art:

We did two art projects this week. The first was a handprint collage inspired by Cueva de las Manos in Argentina. We used art paper and chalk pastels.
Second, Archer used air dry clay to make his own little Moai statue like those from Easter Island.

Peru Week

Our next country in our Around the World Homeschool curriculum was Peru. I know that Build Your Library and Torch Light skip it, but my mom was born there, so we decided to take a week on it.

Books:

VÁMONOS: Lima (board book)

Activities:

Coloring the Peruvian flag from Little Passports
Archer colored a map of Peru. He decided to use the colors from his wooden Peru map puzzle, which he also did.
Andean mountain maze from Around the World Mazes

Recipe:

We tend to eat Peruvian Roast Chicken and rice with egg and avocado pretty often, so I thought I'd try a new Peruvian recipe. We did a classic Lomo Saltado served over rice. Everyone in the family liked it, especially the French fries after they soaked up the drippings from the beef and veggies.

Read Aloud:

This week we continued reading The Boxcar Children Great Adventure: The Khipu and the Final Key. It starts in Argentina and ends in Peru, which was perfect for our schedule.

Art:

For art, he decorated a fancy llama. I printed an outline on cardstock and he cut it out and wrapped yarn around it. Then he bedazzled it.

Biome Units: Tropical Forests

As we tour the world, we are also learning about various biomes around the world. We spent a couple of weeks focused on tropical rain forests. While we did this unit while studying Brazil, we also included resources about the African and Asian rainforests.

Books:

We read a TON of books for this unit.
What is a Jungle
Explore the Tropical Rain Forest (just skimmed together)
Amazon Sun Amazon Rain
Chameleons are Cool
Going to the Rainforest
The Wild Life of Animals (pertinent animals)
Red-Eyed Tree Frog vs Wood Frog
Rain Forest Homes
These were a couple of pages (I think there were six total) from The Wonder Garden.
The rainforest page from What's Below

Activities:

Activity Books
Animal Poems from the Iguazu (not exactly an activity, but we read poetry every week so it worked)
Puzzle Jungle
Jungle Picture Puzzle Book

A couple of pages from Jungle Sticker Facts. I think this was the favorite of the activity books
Amazon page from Adventures Around the Globe Activity Book

Every week I'm trying to get in at least one logic puzzle game and one board game. This week he played One in a Chameleon and we played Hiss, which I felt both fit the theme.
Rainforest Toob animals and vocabulary card matching
Rainforest Sensory Bin - I used various shades of green rice and then some brightly colored pasta for "flowers" and "butterflies." I gave them the South American and Rain Forest Animals to play. Sensory bins are always a hit with both kids.
Climbing tree frog - He painted some art paper and then we traced a frog outline onto it. He used a hole punch on each hand and we put in little suction cups to let it climb the window.
Rainforest Play Dough Tray - I gave him a dried out coconut shell, some leaf cookie cutters, some gems and leaves and Rain Forest Toob Animals.
He drew a Toucan from Draw Write Now 7

Rainforest Theme Tot School

Since we are studying different biomes of the world for big brother's homeschool, I thought it might be fun to take a week to do rainforests with him. She's only 16 months, so obviously, I don't really expect her to learn anything about the rainforest. Instead, it was just a fun theme and excuse to read our rainforest related books.

Rain Forest Related Books:
Snake Slide - little coils of pipe cleaners down a tube. We started with a plastic jar, but eventually switched to a square one to catch them. Big brother thought it was fun, too!
Reusable puffy stickers.
Leaves on Trees - I stole the rings from Otrio and had her practice sliding them on a pasta drying rack. It was a lot harder for her than I expected.
Frog Pond - I put little frog stickers on clothespins and then put them on a container for her to take off.
Juniper has been enjoying our South American animals that I got out for her brother (regular size, not Toob size). We have a spider monkeymama tapir and baby tapira sloth and treellamas and alpacas, a jaguar and a capybara (similar). She keeps putting the llamas in her shirt.
Coloring a chameleon (and side eyeing brother's cooler art project).
Feed the Monkey - I put a monkey face on a cereal box and had her feed him little Toob Food.
Rainforest Sensory Bin - I used various shades of green rice and then some brightly colored pasta for "flowers" and "butterflies." I gave them the South American and Rain Forest Animals to play. Sensory bins are always a hit.
Chameleon bean bag toss (or walk over and put it in the hole 😂)
