Southern Asia Week 2 (Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia)

This week in our Around the World Homeschool Curriculum was the second on Southern Asia. We mainly focused on Thailand, but also learned about Indonesia and Vietnam.

Books:

Of course, we still read our spines, but we also read lots of good picture books.

Activities:

Recipe:

Beef Pho. My husband and I love it (although restaurant versions better than home versions). The kids weren't convinced.

Read Aloud:

For read aloud we read A Pack-n-Go Girls book, The Mystery of the Golden Temple. I think this has been the Pack-n-Go Girls book he has liked the best. We even finished early because he wanted me to keep reading. This series does a great job of blending facts into the story.

Art:

For art this week, we learned about Batik fabric from Indonesia. Rather than attempting to make our own fabric, we just used a white crayon and watercolors on white paper.

Tot School Black and White Weet

We recently wrapped out the black and white week of our color themes.  As with the boys, my goal is not for her to learn her colors. You can see my tot school goals here.

Juniper's little area on our wall. I put up her color posters was free from Isla Hearts Teaching on TPT
Working on her coloring book pages (free here).
Stickers on black paper
Painting white on black paper
Working on her coloring book pages (free here).
This was supposed to be big and little size sorting, but she ended up wanting to put the moms and babies together.
Black and white playdough included dice, googly eyes, beads and paper straws.
I got out several black and white animals. Here she is making her orca and penguin dance.
Unifix cube pattern matching (she did ok but lost interest very quickly). Free Printable here
White chalk on blackboard.
I put a bunch of black and white toob animals in some shaving cream, thinking it would be a fun sensory bin. Nope. She freaked out as soon as she touched the shaving cream.

Japan and Korea Week

Our next week in our Around the World Homeschool Curriculum was Japan and Korea (we kind of lumped North and South Korea)

Books:

My Japan

Activities:

Mazes from Around the World Mazes

Recipe:

Since we eat sushi (well, not the kids) and hibachi, we decided to try some Korean foods this week. We LOVE Thai dumplings, so gave Korean Dumplings a shot. We ended up really liking them, but slightly preferring our Thai recipe. We also tried Bibimbap. Everyone in the family really liked it. It may have to stay in our regular recipe book, although it does kind of take a lot of prep.

Read Aloud:

I did not have a great country-related read aloud for this week. We took the opportunity to try something totally different and read The Chocolate Touch. It stressed Archer out just a little, but I think he did like it overall. Maybe not one he will reread on his own, though...

Art:

Our original plan was to do some Japanese style art printing. This ended up in Styrofoam all over the house and no actual prints, so we had to come up with a plan B. Enter, broccoli Japanese Cherry Blossoms!
Archer painted the tree outline with brown first. When it was dry he dipped some broccoli into pink paint to make the cherry blossoms. The paint was slightly shimmery and I think it turned out great!
