Lately we have been working on an Ocean theme.  To supplement our other activities, I made a few printable materials.  You're welcome to use them with you little one if you'd like.

Ocean Life Vocabulary Cards

For preschool this year we are doing themes, and the first one is Oceans.  To go with it I picked up the Oceans Toob and made some accompanying 3 part cards.  I also made a Little Reader lesson for those of you who use that program.

Our Presentation

I always introduce a new set of cards on Little Reader (I explain how we set up Little Reader here).  After viewing the lesson a few times, he usually does a great job matching up the cards!

 

Somehow the octopus got misplaced.  He matched all the others though.

Z for Zoology

     Background

Last letter (ok, so I'll probably go back and do some of the letters again with new concepts).  This week we did Z for zoology, which I defined as the study of animals and their behavior.  Mostly we read a lot of books and talked about the different things we could study about animals (where they live, anatomy, life cycles, family groups, etc).  We also read a bunch of books about animals.  Xander really got a kick out of Whose Bottom is This?
  

Zoo Design Challenge

Materials:

Toob Animals

Sticks, rocks, pine cones, etc.

For this activity I simply had Xander design a zoo.  We went on a stick hunt to collect sticks (which he thought was wonderful).  I also picked up some rocks and gems from the dollar store.  I gave him a ton of animals and let him go at it.  He thought it was fun and I was happy to give him an opportunity to work on those design and problem solving skills.  I hope to do more fun activities like this in the future!  I'd love to integrate more STEAM type activities

I was impressed that he (mostly) put insects together.

Letter Z Week

Can't believe this my last letter of the week post!  It's a little bitter sweet, but I am excited to start our themed units!

Letter Formation/Pre-Writing

 Using his Build a Letter Templates and HWWT pieces. First he built the letters on the templates, then he built them by themselves.

We used some kinetic sand and alphabet stampers with our letter z alphabet stamping play dough mat.

He used his design rollers with some ink pads to decorate some Zs.

Life Skills

Xander has been asking to vacuum lately.  I've let him take over a few rooms a week.  He is SO proud of himself when he is done, although it does take a lot of my self control not to go in and do it "right" after him.  I'm working on encouraging him instead!
