Early Readers: Playing Outside

I've been working on making early readers for Archer.  I wanted books that have big clear text on its own page. I have also been making them in Spanish. This one was all about playing outside.

I think I have finally settled on a format I like!  This book has horizontal pages (which makes using a 3 hole punch so much easier), with words on the right and pictures on the left.  I printed on cardstock and laminated the pages. Then, I used a 3 hold punch to make the holes and used 3/4" binder rings to "bind" the books.

Early Readers - Pets Book

I've been working on making early readers for Archer.  I wanted books that have clear text on one page and the picture on the next.  I have also been making them in Spanish to try to reinforce the vocabulary.  Here is the latest book I made - Pets.

Here are example pages (words on one page, picture on the following).

Spanish Vocabulary: Parts of the Head

Since we have been working on a Human Body Unit, I decided to make some vocab cards in Spanish to go along with it. We started out with parts of the head. You can print the cards here.

Our Presentation

I usually introduce a new set of cards on Little Reader (I explain how we set up Little Reader here).  After viewing the lesson a few times, he usually does a great job matching up the cards!

Spanish Shape and Color Habitats

In last Monday's Tot School post I mentioned that I have started working with Xander on reading his colors in Spanish.  As part of that I translated one of the habitat activities from the Mommy and Me ABC printables to Spanish.  (Each letter has a set of animals with different colors shapes on them.  We then find their their "home").  Well, I finally got them all translated, so you can now use them with your little ones!  Just print the animals from the Mommy and Me ABC pages!

U for Urchin

We are currently working on our Mommy and Me ABC units.  This week we did the letter U and urchins.  Honestly, urchins are kind of boring, so we did a lot of non-letter activities this week.  Unless otherwise specified, all of the printables are from my Mommy and Me ABC Printables, which are free as we complete them (for a detailed list of all the materials in the printables, check out this post).

 This was his desk setup. On the left is his magnetic calendar.  His white board had some alphabet magnets, and his fridge phonics set.  The shelf had some Us and some U books.

We built some Us using Handwriting Without Tears pieces.

Concentrating hard on his letter maze.  He chose a purple Do-A-Dot marker to mark all of the U's connecting the little urchin to the big urchin.

 A friend and I split a package of Handy Scoopers.  Xander had a great time using them in his alphabet bin!

Spanish Habitat Page

Xander outgrew his color and shape habitat pages a long time ago.  However, in order to mix it up, and teach him something new, I converted this page to Spanish.  While it was a little bit of a struggle for him, he got a few without any help!  We will work our way up to him being able to do it all on his own!

To learn the colors in Spanish, he has been watching a Little Reader lesson I made.

Workbook
I'm slowly trying to get Xander used to worksheets.  This week we did this fun fireman sticker page from our Emergency Vehicle sticker book.  He had to go more slowly than he would have liked, but he got all the stickers in the correct places.
