Earth's Spheres Unit

As a previous science teacher, I am writing my own "curriculum" for our 5th grade home school this year (see other units here). I have divided the 16 5th grade Next Generation Science Standards into units. This is my plan for the Sun and Earth Unit, consisting of the following standards:
  • 5-ESS1-1. Support an argument that differences in the apparent brightness of the sun compared to other stars is due to their relative distances from Earth.
  • 5-ESS1-2. Represent data in graphical displays to reveal patterns of daily changes in length and direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky.
Some notes:
The national standards focus on science content, but also science and engineering practices. These practices are an integral part of each standard, which means curriculum and assessment might look a little different than it did when I was a student. Assessments do not have to be a regular "test." Sometimes they will be a lab or a model a student draws of their understanding of an idea.

Also, this is curriculum I, a science teacher, wrote for my academically advanced son. Plus, I was not present for his previous years of school science, so do not know what gaps he may have. In many places, will go way more in depth than just doing the minimum to meet the standard. If you choose to use my resources, please keep that in mind. Feel free to message me about anything you feel needs clarification or more explanation.

Historical Figures Doodle Notebook

Since we decided to homeschool, I have been acquiring and bookmarking even more books than normal. Some of these books have been books on women, minorities, or other historical figures like Little Legends, Women in Science and Bad Girls Throughout History.
I'd been mulling over how best to utilize these books and I decided on this Historical Figures Doodle Notebook. My idea is that I will read about one of the historical figures out loud. While I read, my son can "doodle." He can draw or write words about the person and why they were significant. That way it doesn't feel like a tough chore, but he will be still at least be exposed to the information. You could use it with any significant figure.

I printed my cover on cardstock, printed my pages back to back, used my binding punch and then a binding spine to make a notebook. You could also use a 3 ring binder.

Evolution Books for Kids

A wide variety of books about evolution and natural selection for children.
As a former science teacher, I've always sought out great kids science books. When we decided to start homeschooling, I doubled down on my need desire to acquire lots of great nonfiction for our home library. In addition to the books we already own, I've searched the internet, read reviews and received great recommendations from other parents. So many are just beautiful to look through. I thought it might be helpful to other parents like me start a blog series with kids books by subject. It is fun to have variety and options in order to pick the books that work best for you family. Or, if you're like me, you'll want them all and your bookshelves will be overflowing and your wishlists will be infinite. :) I will probably come back and update these.

Here are some books about Evolution. I tried to group them into categories.

Evolution Picture Books

Grandmother Fish by Jonathan Tweet
Older Than the Stars by Karen C. Fox
One of those that adds a new line or two every page, like the Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly. It also has sidebars that add more information to grow with the child.
Annabelle and Aiden: The Story of Life (An Evolution Story) by J.R. Becker
Annabelle and Aiden: Worlds Within Us by J.R. Becker by J.R. Becker
Our Family Tree: An Evolution Story by Lisa Westberg Peters
Beautiful pictures, but a little long for a picture book for younger kids. It says grades 1-3, but I think older elementary could enjoy it as well.
Based on reviews, this is a simpler book that does not go into the mechanics of evolution or natural selection. Probably better as a foundation for lower elementary.

*The Universe Tells Our Cosmic Story by Jennifer Morgan

*Note: It can be argued that this series supports the idea of intelligent design. There is definitely personification of the universe and it attempts to recreate the life it saw in one of its dreams. However, my son and I discussed it and he did not take away the message of intelligent design (maybe because we have other books on evolution?). We think the books are interesting and beautifully illustrated.

Longer (More Reference Type) Evolution Books for Kids

When the Whales Walked by Dougal Dixon
Darwin's Tree of Life by Michael Bright

 Evolution Graphic Novels

Bigfoot and Adaptations by Terry Lee Collins

Island: A Story of the Galapagos by

Human Evolution Books for Kids

Bonus Evolution Resources for Kids

Good for a discussion of coevolution
Gregor Mendel: The Friar Who Grew Peas by
Who Was Charles Darwin? by Deborah Hopkinson
A game rated highly enough that there are multiple expansions.
This is the shorter, simpler version of the game. We have this one, because I bought it when my oldest was younger and because it is hard to find time for games that are over an hour long with a toddler in the house.
