Q for Quail

We are currently working on our Mommy & Me ABC units.  This week was Q for Quail!  Most of the images are Japanese Quail though, because that is what I was able to purchase good quality images for.  Unless otherwise specified, all of the printables are from my Mommy and; Me ABC Printables, which are free as we complete them (for a detailed list of all the materials in the printables, check out this post).

This was his desk setup. On the left is his magnetic calendar.  His white board had some alphabet magnets, and his fridge phonics set.  The shelf had a some of Qs and Q books.  The flashcards on the wall are form 1+1+1=1.
Animal Cages
By far the favorite activity this week was his animal cages.  I picked out some Toob animals of which we had two and put each pair in one of the doors of his Animal Hospital.  Then I wrote the beginning letter of each animal name on a piece of paper in both uppercase and lowercase.  He had "free" the animals and then put them on their corresponding letters.
 Q and Quail Puzzles
We did both printable and store bought puzzles.

 Letter Clipping
 Matching uppercase and lowercase Qs.
 Letter Maze
For something different, I made up a letter maze for Xander this week.  I gave him a Do-A-Dot marker and had him mark all of the Qs to make a path from the baby to the mommy.  He loved it and wanted to do it again.

After he was done he traced the path with his finger.  We hung this page next to his desk and he would periodically go over and trace the path.
 Tracing
Building Qs
We used our Handwriting Without Tears pieces to build some Qs.  He really surprised me in how well he did!  I think I showed him each letter once, and then he was able to build them all by himself.  I put out his magnetic letters as guides, but it turns out he didn't need them after he had built each letter himself once.
Math and Reading Eggs
It is hard to find activities for quail, so I improvised a bit with these eggs.  I took apart a bunch of old Easter eggs and mixed them up.  Then I wrote numbers on the bottoms and put dots on the tops to make a matching game.  I put them all into an egg carton (which I forgot to photograph) so that he could have fun putting them in the carton when he was done.

It turned out putting the eggs together was too difficult for him (and sometimes me), so I just had him stack the pairs.
To fill the rest of the carton, I used some eggs with word families on them.  He was not all that interest in them, though.
  Quail Lacing
Lacing some quail and some letter Qs.   He doesn't exactly go hole to hole, but I'm just happy he's practicing.
 Case Sorting
Sometimes Tot School happens in pjs.  Here he is sorting Qs into Mommy and Baby letters.
 Finger Painting
Xander's first experience finger painting that he can remember.  He wasn't so sure about actually haven't to stick his fingers in the paint, but he loved swirling it around on the paper.  The Q is from 1+1+1=1.
 Stamping
He stamped some uppercase and lowercase Qs with our see through stamps.
 Quail Number Cards
We matched number tiles to the cards with the correct number of quail.  I wrote the numbers on the back so we could flip through them like flashcards.

  Other Tot School Activities
For some writing practice, I wrote some letters on his little dry erase board and then had him use the eraser on the end to erase the letters.
I got out his Thomas Memory Game and he had fun doing that this week.  He was  SO proud when he would get them right!
We finally got a break in the weather and made a trip to the zoo this week!  Xander had a blast!
Checking off the animals on the Zoo Scavenger Hunt page I made him.
I dug out a a Thomas Floor Puzzle and Xander LOVED it.  He can't do it by himself, but we did it together many times this week.  I think I may have to include a floor puzzle in our weekly activities.

I found the stinker reading in bed long after he should have been asleep.  It makes me so happy that he loves books so much!
Sandbox fun!

Tot School Area Changes

I'm super excited about a big change that happened here!  I moved Xander's crib to another room!  That may not sound like a huge deal, but we have been sharing a room since we moved in a year and a half ago.  While it is a big room, it was a tight squeeze to fit all of our bedroom furniture, my desk, and the Tot School things into one room.  It also means I should be able to get more sleep and get more done when he is sleeping (my computer is in the room, so was hard to use when he was "supposed" to be sleeping).

Moving the crib means I got to move the shelves where we keep his weekly activities.  Doesn't this look great?  They were previously sideways between my bed and my desk.  I love that everything is so easily accessible and we have a lot more floor space for activities!

The Tot School half of the room.

I'm really hoping this lets me stay a lot more organized!

P for Penguin Week 2

We are currently working on our Mommy & Me ABC units.  This was our second week of the letter P and penguins (you can see last week's post here)!  Unless otherwise specified, all of the printables are from my Mommy & Me ABC Printables, which are free as we complete them (for a detailed list of all the materials in the printables, check out this post).

This was his desk setup. On the left is his magnetic calendar.  His white board had some alphabet magnets, and his fridge phonics set.  The shelf had a some of Ps and a bunch of penguins.

 P and Penguin Puzzles
We did both printable and store bought puzzles.
 Play Dough
Play dough is always a hit!.  We used some cookie cutters and his dough stampers to make some Ps.  We also used play dough snakes to form a P.
 Letter Clipping
 Matching uppercase and lowercase Ps.

Penguin Lacing
"Jumping Rope" with the lacing string.

Alphabet Sensory Tub
I added his Penguin Toob to his alphabet tub and he loved it!  He even got my brother's girlfriend to play in the noodles with him for a long time!
 Shape Icebergs
We reviewed shapes by putting each pengin in his "home." For some reason he loved the idea of helping the lost penguins (much more than just playing a matching game)!

 Peg Letter P
Some serious peg play with his lowercase P.
Playing the "flute."
Penguin Cutting Strips
He has really been into cutting lately!  We used his training scissors to cut apart some penguins
 Penguin Number Cards
We matched number tiles to the cards with the correct number of penguins, numbers 6-10 this week.
Pattern Shape Penguin
We worked together to make the pattern shape penguin (from our Zoo Animal Set) using magnetic pattern blocks.  For some reason he likes doing it on the alphabet box better than a white board.

 Snow Painting Penguins
I made some snow paint and printed some penguins onto card stock.  He had a blast and I think it turned out pretty cute!  Using the tray and the smock was a good idea though!

 Other Tot School Activities
Playing his own version of Qwirkle by sorting the tiles into shapes as he drew them from the bag.
