Memory Games

Babies and toddlers are little sponges.  As part of their amazing brain capabilities, they have great memories. Xander is always surprising me by remembering things that I never would have imagined he even paid attention to in the first place.  I have decided I want to help him develop and retain him memory skills, so we are starting to do some memory games.

I was inspired by the games presented in Babylicious, but decided to make my own to make it more engaging for Xander.  Right now, we are starting very simple. Basically I am showing him a 2x2 grid of images for 5-10 seconds.  Then I take it away and give him a blank grid and separate images for him to put in their "spots."  For now, I am only giving him the four images that were in the original grid, but may eventually give him extra images so he has to determine the correct ones.  I could also increase the size of the grids or add complexity to the background in the future.  While it is taking him a little while to catch on to the concept, he absolutely loves playing.  He would play many times in a row if I let him.
You can download the game grids I made by clicking the pictures below.

Please help us out!!!
Xander has made it into the final five for the Sparkabilities video contest to win an iPad.  We need your help to win!  Each view on YouTube counts as a vote.  Voting goes through the end of the month and you can vote multiple times (although not from mobile devices).  I would absolutely love to have an iPad for him because I think it would be a great resource for educational apps and I wouldn't be able to afford one until I finish grad school.   Please take the time to watch, it is only 37 seconds!  THANK YOU!

Xander's Birthday

My baby turned two last week!  I can't believe how fast it went!  Here are a few pictures from our fun filled day!

We started off at an indoor water park.  Xander exceeded my every expectation with how well he handled the car ride!
Flirting with a lady in the water.

Then we went to dinner with Grandma and Grandpa.  The little guy ate a ton and then was given some friend ice cream.

Then home for presents and cake.
He had to dump his Construction Truck Sort and Match out immediately to see if he liked it.

Showing off his new learning link chain.
Super excited about his new Thomas books.  He got some Step Into Reading books and a Thomas On Track with Phonics set.

Trying out his new Candy Construction Kit
Trying on some things from his dress up box.
Thomas cake, of course!  I wanted to make a really neat 3D Thomas I found on Pinterest, but did not have the time.  Also, we didn't do a real party, so it didn't seem worth the effort.  Instead I bought bath squirters to put on a simpler cake.

Birthday Themed Tot School

Birthday Week
Xander is 24 Months

With Halloween and Xander's birthday being last week, we planned a relatively light Tot School week.  He really seemed to like the activities we did though.

Birthday Words
This tray had some 3 part cards of birthday words (which you can download here or from the Printables Page).  I also made a Little Reader lesson you can download here.

Food/Friend Sorting
I got this sorting activity from 1+1+1=1.  He thought it was funny to talk about the friends.  He thought the one little boy was Little Boy Blue from Super Why.

Thomas Memory Game
I made Xander a new set of memory games (I will be sharing them later this week).  He LOVED the Thomas theme.  I had trouble holding him to one or two games at a time.

Candle Counting
This tray was the favorite, by far!  It had a set of silicone baking cups, some candles, and 0-5 number tiles.  I would put a number tile in front of each baking cup for him to put the corresponding number of candles in.

He kept putting the candle to his head and saying "umbrella."

Balloon Size Sort
This balloon size sorting activity was from Homeschool Creations.  There were too many for him to sort on his own, but he had fun doing it with my help.

Birthday Color Match
This activity was from HSPrintables.  He had a good time matching the colors on the clothespins to the wheels.  He thought it looked like a sun.

Special Events
This was Xander's Super Why inspired costume.   I couldn't find a Super Why costume small enough, so I ordered the personalize shirt from Etsy and made the cape and mask to match.  Even though he didn't get to go trick or treating (Mommy had class late that night), he got to wear it to a party at the children's museum and to a day care party.
My baby turned two last week!  We had a wonderful day, and I will do a separate post with recaps.

Toys
Playing with some interchangeable vehicles from IKEA and his beginner pattern blocks.

Birthday Letter

Dear Xander,

Happy Birthday!  As I sit down to write this, I can't even begin to put into words everything I want to tell you.  I never would have believed a person so young could have a personality so large!  You are shy with new people at first, but then eventually open up into your little spitfire self.  You like making little jokes and then saying "Funnny!  Funnnnnny!"  You love hanging out with your friends, but you are particularly close to your grandparents and your Uncle Brice.  However, you are completely obsessed with his girlfriend Klah (Kayla).

You're bright, very very bright.  You're starting to pick things up so quickly, I cannot keep up with how fast you want to learn them.  You are constantly shocking me by the little things you remember.  For example, a couple of weeks ago I told you our friend Lindsey was coming to visit us (she lives in NYC).  You immediately asked "white car?"  After a bit of thinking, I realized you were right.  She tends to borrow her mom's white car when she is in town.  I have no idea how you knew.  We haven't seen her in months, you have never been in the car, and we have never had a discussion about the car.  There are many more times you have surprised me with observations like this.

You love reading and are always asking to see "words" (Little Reader lessons) on the computer.  You will sit and listen to books for incredibly long periods of time, even some surprisingly long books.  I love to sit an listen to you "read" a book to yourself.  Your favorites are Super Why and Thomas.  You also love all other things Thomas.  You always ask "Thomas dirty?" if I put you in any pajamas that are not Thomas themed.  At night you sleep with a little Thomas train.  On more than one occasion I have had to go searching for him in the night.

You are playful and love attention, especially from adults.  However, in groups, you tend to hang back and observe.  You like to take it all in and see what is going on.  You don't mind if another kid steals a toy from you, and if you're getting ready to do something (go down a slide, crawl in a tunnel), you tend to back away and let someone else who comes along go first.  Janet, our day care provider, says she has never seen you throw a fit or get angry, although you can have quite the temper at home.  Ever since you were tiny you have gotten this really stern serious face when you're intrigued by something, even if you really enjoy it.

I still call you my baby (and probably always will), but you are turning into such a big boy.  We can have conversations and you can very clearly express your wants and opinions.  In some ways you are so fiercely independent (I think you get it from me)!  You don't understand why you can't have free reign over everything in the house, why you can't climb ladders, use scissors, brush your own teeth... basically why you can't do everything I can do.  You have started telling me "Xander do it!"  On that note, you are such a little dare devil when it comes to physical activity!  I constantly find you climbing up the outside of the staircase.  Skinned knees were a frequent occurrence this summer, and mostly just shrugged off as an annoying interruption to your games rather than something to get upset about.  You want to climb, swing, jump, and be tossed around in the air.  It is funny to be carried upside down, dropped onto the bed, or tickled behind the knees.

Xander, I really could write for days.  I want to capture every little moment with you and keep it safely locked in my memory.  You make my life infinitely more fun and meaningful.  You are my motivation, my driving force.  You can always make me laugh or melt my heart.  Please try not to change too much as you grow.  Know always that I love you.

Window Leaf Craft

As part of our Halloween Week we did this leaf craft to go in the window.  I wasn't sure how it would turn out, but was really happy with the results.

We started with a sheet of clear contact paper I taped to his table.  I printed a leaf outline I found with Google, traced it onto construction paper, and used an Exacto knife to cut out the inside (much easier than it sounds, I was a little apprehensive).
I cut a bunch of squares of tissue paper for him to stick inside the leaf.

He may have dumped one of the bags...  Luckily it was after most of the leaf was covered, so they didn't all stick.
I covered it in another sheet of contact paper, cut it out, and hung it in the window!  Tada!
